African Wildlife Exposed Greg Du Toit 9780620561716 Books Reviews

This is an excellent book of African wildlife photos.

The author writes brief notes about the photos. Sometimes it is a note about the animal, sometimes about getting the shot, and sometimes about the perils of being a wildlife photographer-- various infections and other illnesses

This book has many interesting shots that shows the author's skill, luck and patience.
Several animals appear quite frequently-- sorry I didn't draw up lists-- these are just impressions.
Lions
Zebra
Leopards by day and night.

Pictures.
You may just want the telling picture.
There are several portraits of groups. The cover photo is an example
Query 2 lionesses and one cub from last year's litter the some.5 from this year's lot--this is a great shot.It is well framed, the picture is large enough to get a good look at the detail.
Similar portraits occur for some animals commonly seen in groups like zebra, and elephants.

A zebra family by water.
For me, the best picture in the book.
Why?
You see the family more clearly than in other books.
The stallion is at on end and clearly seen.
Next a relatively small female who is heavily pregnant-- gives a vague idea of size for females.
Next is a fairly large zebra-- my guess is that it is an adult stallion-- their father's don't run them out when they become adult. As they get a bit larger and stronger they leave.
Tend to join Batchelor herds
Probably 4 mares
Smaller zebra on end-- probably a foal about half the size of the zebra next to him? His mother.
For me , that is great-- it is the basis group of the plains zebra family-- they form larger herds. They tend to graze close together and drink together in family groups.
If you read about the ecosystem-- it helps you to stick the bits together and learn more about what you are looking at.

There are a few shots of wildebeest.

Leopards feature prominently.
In East Africa Leopards are hard to see, you see them much more clearly in Southern Africa.
Seen by day and seen by nights huntinging, resting, sleeping and caring for young.
In some areas leopards are well seen, but often they are missed.
Beautiful shot of Leopard asleep In the tree with a crescent moon ( one of the top photos )

Others
Lions
I liked the lion, lioness and Cubs photos.
The photos are crisp, they somehow capture the scene-- no doubt he had many thousands of shots to choice from-- many choices are excellent

Elephants
Several great photos.
A great 2 page spread of a matriarch and family there are three generations with cows with their calves. The calves range from young-- all walk next to their mother ( none under her)
Calves vary in age.

Non mammals.
There are pictures of birds, reptiles, butterflies, other insects and others.
Birds featured fairly prominently-- again excellent shots -- a number were portraits, others show birds at sunrise outlined by the sun

Some Blackand White photos.
Cover various animals in various situations-- using B&W can help you see features you would not have seen in colour.
The vapour coming from a lion's mouth and nose as it breaths more heavily would be an example.

There are some wonderful sunrises or sunsets
There are some wonderful landscape shots-- the double page ones often being first class.

Summary
The author wasWildlife Photograher of the year--2013.
The photos are first class.
Highly recommended.
I was so impressed with this author/ photographer's work that I have bought many of his books ( not all are listed on )

If I was going for another of his books, the next I would pick is
"Africa's Big Five"
William Taylor, Gerald Hinde, Richard du Toit.
There is a full and informative text which us a joy to read. It built on the knowledge I had.
It however is approachable by the novice.
The photos vary in size, all are crisp and well captioned ( they are numbered so if you are unsure what caption goes with what check the number.
Highly Recommended
The Big Five is the name for a particular group of animals
Lions
Elephants
Leopards
Rhino
Cape Buffalo.

I look through this author's books on a regular basis
